The Genesis Scottish Open delivered one of the best stories of the year in 2024 when Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre birdied the 72nd hole to win in his native country. It was a magical moment when the man from Oban drained the 22-footer and all of Scotland started to celebrate. It was his second PGA Tour victory of the year.
This year, Rory McIlroy was in the hunt for most of the week but it was 25-year-old American Chris Gotterup who shot a second-round 61 at Renaissane Club in North Berwick and then held on with a final-round 66 to top McIlroy and England’s Marco Penge by two shots. It was Gotterup’s second PGA Tour victory, but this one puts him on a different level, collecting $1.575 million from the overall $9 million purse on stacked field of an event co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
Gotterup was emotional in his post-round television interview and his victory earned him a trip to Northern Ireland next week for the British Open. McIlroy shot a final-round 68 and, although the clear favorite to win, never mounted too much of a charge. He made three early birdies but then made par on each of the last 10 holes.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler shot a final-round 67 and tied for eighth place. Aside from Gotterup, Nicolai Hojgaard and Matti Schmid also qualified for the Open through their respective finishes.
The PGA Tour is also hosting another event this week in Kentucky, the ISCO Championship. Up next, of course, is the British Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. The Barracuda Championship will run opposite of that in California before the 3M Open and Wyndham Championship close out the regular season.
