Can Scottie Scheffler Break Tiger Woods’ Record? Michael Kim Weighs In

As Scottie Scheffler continues his impressive reign atop the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), the inevitable question arises: can he possibly break Tiger Woods’ legendary record for the most consecutive weeks as World No. 1?
Tiger Woods remains untouchable in the record books with an astonishing 683 weeks at the top — including an unmatched streak of 281 consecutive weeks between 2005 and 2010. By contrast, Scheffler, despite dominating in 2024 and part of 2025, has only held the position for a fraction of that time.
This week, PGA Tour pro Michael Kim sparked headlines when he analyzed Scheffler’s chances and gave a sobering assessment: “It’s almost impossible.”
According to Kim, Woods’ era was marked by an unparalleled level of dominance, consistency, and intimidation. “Tiger wasn’t just No. 1 — he was in another galaxy,” Kim said. “To even come close to what he achieved, a player would need to win multiple majors per season, almost without interruption.”

Kim noted that while Scheffler has been a model of consistency and excellence — particularly with his ball-striking and mental toughness — the modern era of golf is simply too competitive. “You’ve got players like Rory, Rahm, Ludvig, even young talents rising every year. The depth is unreal now,” he explained.
Scheffler’s recent performances have included multiple wins and a Masters title, putting him at the forefront of the game. However, staying at No. 1 for hundreds of weeks, in today’s ever-rotating field of elite players, might require something close to a miracle.
Still, fans and analysts alike remain captivated by the possibility. Scheffler himself has downplayed the chatter about records, focusing instead on improvement and long-term consistency.
“I’m just trying to get better every week,” he recently said. “I’ll let the rankings take care of themselves.”
For now, the debate continues. Can anyone, in this era, truly challenge Tiger’s reign? Michael Kim thinks not — but golf has always been a sport full of surprises.
