Trump’s approval down 8 points since start of year: Poll

President Trump’s approval rating has dropped 8 points since he started his second presidential term, according to an Emerson College Polling survey released Thursday.

Forty-one percent of voters said they approve of the job Trump is doing as president, down from 49 percent who said the same in January. And 50 percent of voters disapprove of Trump’s job handling, marking a flip in his numbers since the start of his second term.

Asked to rate the president’s issue handling on a grade scale of A through F, Trump performed best on immigration, with 37 percent of voters giving him top marks. But a plurality of voters gave Trump a failing grade on the economy, affordability and health care.

The economy was the top issue facing the country in the eyes of 38 percent of voters, beating out threats to democracy, health care and immigration, which were at 14 percent each.

The latest Emerson results come amid a smattering of recent polls showing lukewarm numbers for the president as he closes out the first year of his second term.

Trump last month touted that he had received “THE HIGHEST POLL NUMBERS OF MY ‘POLITICAL CAREER,’” though experts pointed to polls showing his numbers slipping.

The Emerson survey notably finds Trump’s approval rating steady since last month, as economic concerns were underscored during the record-long government shutdown. Polling averages from Decision Desk HQ, though, suggest Trump’s rating has had a slight rebound since.
