It would be tough to discover a respectable conservative who appreciated Rob Reiner’s left-wing political views. But now, it will be impossible to find a respectable conservative celebrating his passing. Reiner, aged 78, was tragically found stabbed to death alongside his wife, Michele Singer, in their residence in Hollywood on Sunday. Their middle child, Nick Reiner, is allegedly a suspect in their murder.
The responses from various political groups — in comparison to the assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk in September — reveal much about the state of American politics.
To the lasting shame of the American left, Kirk’s death was celebrated by his political opponents.
However, Reiner, a staunch liberal even by Hollywood standards, had a contrasting perspective. In an October interview with “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” he demonstrated the impact that decency can have:
“Absolute horror,” Reiner said, when Morgan asked about his “immediate, gut-reaction” to Kirk’s assassination.
“It’s beyond belief what happened to him. That should never happen to anybody,” Reiner said. “I don’t care what your political beliefs are. That’s not acceptable.”
No, the killing of Charlie Kirk was not justifiable; however, for far too many individuals on the American left, it was not only justifiable but also a source of pride. Leftists took to social media to celebrate Kirk’s death. For many, the killing became a subject of ridicule.
This is not the reaction that Americans will witness following the murders of the Reiners.
Certainly, there will be some individual or another purporting to be a conservative who will ridicule the passing of the man the nation first became acquainted with as “Meathead” on the 1970s television show “All in the Family.”
However, the broadly shared response thus far is — and will probably continue to be — largely a reflection of Reiner’s sentiments regarding Kirk’s death. Here’s a decent sampling of what you’re going to find online as of this writing:
