Rory McIlroy takes a (funny) shot at this PGA Championship venue

OK, we’ve seen enough. Rory McIlroy is BACK. Actually, we’ve heard enough.

Remember when Rory wasn’t doing as much media earlier this year. And when he was doing media, he didn’t seem to be in great spirits? Well, thankfully, that phase seems to have passed. Because one of the best in the game at pressers is cooking once again.

On Wednesday ahead of this week’s Genesis Scottish Open, McIlroy had his usual number of great, thoughtful answers. But we’re focusing on one funny response in which he randomly daggered the PGA of America’s new headquarters, PGA Frisco, which will host two PGA Championships in the near future.

The two-time PGA champ was talking about how winning majors at certain venues means more when he dropped in this dig on the future site of the 2027 and 2034 PGA Championships.

“I would love to win an Open at Portrush, absolutely,” McIlroy said of playing next week’s Open Championship in his home country for a second time. “I would love to win an Open at St. Andrews. I would love to win a U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. I’d love to win a PGA at PGA Frisco—not. (Laughter).”

Rory from the top ropes!

“But no, it’s like there’s venues in the game that just mean a little bit more,” McIlroy continued. “Frisco might get there one day, who knows.”

Hey, he’s totally right. It’s a new venue with no history. Yet. (Although, it’s already hosted this year’s KPMG Women’s PGA and the 2023 Senior PGA Championship.) So of course it’s impossible to compare to established sites. But it was still funny. Anyway, here’s the clip:

Yep, Rory’s back. And we love to see, well, hear it.
