LOS ANGELES, CA — California Governor Gavin Newsom’s attempt to launch a political offensive against President Donald Trump backfired spectacularly on Thursday, as federal immigration agents crashed his “Liberation Day” rally and began making arrests in plain view of the horrified attendees.
The event, staged to unveil Newsom’s plans to counter GOP redistricting efforts, devolved into chaos as heavily armed Border Patrol agents maintained a visible presence outside. Newsom, widely seen as a 2028 presidential hopeful, was left fuming on stage as the Trump administration made it clear that no sanctuary is safe.
“WEAK LITTLE DONALD TRUMP”
Newsom’s reaction was immediate and visceral. Clearly rattled by the sight of federal law enforcement operating with impunity on his doorstep, the Governor’s office sent a furious, all-caps email to Fox News Digital.
“WE WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY WEAK LITTLE DONALD TRUMP, THE CRIMINAL PRESIDENT!” the statement screamed.
During the rally, Newsom’s social media team continued the meltdown, posting: “TRUMP’S PRIVATE ARMY IS ILLEGALLY ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!!” Despite the online rage, neither the Newsom administration nor the City of Los Angeles made any effort to physically remove the federal agents.
Acknowledging the arrests during his speech, a visible shaken Newsom pointed to the perimeter. “Right outside at this exact moment are dozens and dozens of ICE agents,” he told the crowd. “Do you think it’s coincidental? Donald Trump and his minions, Tom Homan… decided that this was a location to advance ICE arrests.”
“Wake up, America. This is a serious moment,” Newsom warned, claiming his streets were being “militarized.”
“MAKING L.A. SAFER”
While Newsom panicked, Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino remained cool, calm, and collected. Speaking to Fox 11, Bovino offered a brutal reality check to the California Governor.
“We’re here making Los Angeles a safer place,” Bovino said. “Since we won’t have politicians who will do that, we do that ourselves. So, that’s why we’re here today.”
When asked if he had a message for Newsom, Bovino didn’t flinch: “Again, we’re making Los Angeles a safer place, we’re going to continue to do that, and they can take that one to the bank and cash it.“
VOTERS TURN ON NEWSOM
To make matters worse for the Governor, a new poll released this week shows his own constituents are turning against his power grabs.
Newsom has been pushing to strip power from California’s independent redistricting commission and hand it back to the Democratic-controlled legislature—a move designed to gerrymander maps in favor of Democrats. However, a POLITICO-Citrin Center survey found that 64% of California voters want to keep the independent commission.
Even among Democrats, 61% oppose Newsom’s plan. With federal agents arresting illegal immigrants at his rallies and his own voters rejecting his political schemes, Gavin Newsom’s “Liberation Day” looked a lot more like a very bad day.
