Disaster for Donald Trump as poll shows nearly 70% of Americans oppose attacks on Iran

A new poll by Democracy Institute shows that nearly 70% of Americans oppose the joint U.S.-Israel attacks on Iran.

In total, 67% of Americans are against the bombardments in the Middle East. Of those opposing the strikes, 77% were Democratic voters and 54% Republican voters, with a margin of 3 percent. Between March 1st and March 2nd, 1,400 American voters were surveyed by Democracy Institute.

Sixty-five percent of voters believe the president should have received the approval of Congress before striking Iran. This includes 81% of Democrats and 53% Republicans.

Over the weekend, U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran, killing the country’s supreme leader. As the assault on Iran continues early week, the death toll in Iran has mounted to 787 people, according to Al Jazeera.

Trump has said the aim of the operation is to “ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.”

“We’re going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally again obliterated,” he said in an eight-minute video posted on Truth Social on Saturday morning.

Before the strikes, one of Oman’s top diplomat, said Iran agreed during indirect talks with the U.S. never to stockpile enriched uranium. Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Oman’s FM also said on Friday a “peace deal is within our reach.”

Fifty-seven percent of Americans surveyed in the poll did not believe Iran was very close to developing a nuclear weapon, including 68% Democrats voters and 50% Republicans.

Sixty-one percent of those surveyed believe Trump did not commit a war crime by attacking Iran without any provocation.

Trump, the self-proclaimed “candidate of peace”, was elected with an “America first” agenda and promised no wars. “I’m not going to start a war. I’m going to stop wars,” Trump told his supporters in his election night victory speech in November 2024.

Eighty percent of those surveyed in the poll think Trump has broken his campaign promise to end foreign wars, which includes 85% of Republican voters surveyed. Seventy-one percent also believe the U.S.’s war on Iran makes Americans less safe.

It remains to be seen how the war will affect the upcoming midterm elections in November. Fifty-four percent of voters surveyed believe the Democrats will win. Republican voters surveyed are split, with 48% believing Democrats will win and 48% believing Republicans will win.
