The fourth of five women’s majors was up this week in beautiful Evian-les-Bains, France, where 132 players were competing at the Amundi Evian Championship.
Forty-six of the top 50 ranked players in the world are playing, topped by World No. 1 Nelly Korda. Ayaka Furue was the defending champion. But it was World No. 99 Grace Kim who shocked the world when she made eagle on the 72nd hole to get into a playoff with Jeeno Thitikul, then went birdie, eagle on the two playoff holes to win. She took home $1.2 million from the overall $8 million purse.
There were nine past champions in the field. There still has not been a repeat winner this year on the LPGA, which is odd. World No. 1 amateur Lottie Woad, who won a professional event last week in Ireland, shot a final-round 64 Sunday and held the clubhouse lead. She tied for third place, one shot out of a playoff.
Next week is the Women’s Scottish Open, then the AIG Women’s Open is the following week at Royal Porthcawl in Wales.
